Darren Turner has been a ski instructor in Serre Chevalier, France for the last 22 years and in summer 2009 he had a brainwave. "I'd been thinking that there was a space for easy-to-understand films about ski technique," he recalls. "I'd been playing around with the idea of DVD's and YouTube. Then I saw the Jamie Oliver cookery iPhone app and it clicked. I didn't want to be on people's computers, but on their phones."

We consulted with Darren's team Elate Media early in the process advising that the way to make these iPhone apps a success and stand above the rest would be to create high quality content. There was no point in being first to market if the films weren't up to scratch. So Elate spent the winter of 2009/10 shooting broadcast quality ski lessons, they spent the best part of 2010 refining and turning them into a series of short instructional films with production values that are unlikely to see any competition this ski season without serious investment.

SkiSchool iPhone apps

Each app — beginner, intermediate and advanced — is divided into 3 sections: an introduction, a series of exercises and "cue cards", quick reminders about key skills. We helped to form the identity, graphic direction and user experience, as always keeping it simple was the key.

The SkiSchool apps featured in a Sunday Times article (paywall) and received an exceptional review entitled:

"The must-have ski app"
