www.volvooceanrace.org, site currently in post-race state.
The Volvo Ocean Race is the Mount Everest of ocean races. It goes to places that no other races go, experiencing conditions beyond the imagination of all but the most experienced sailors. This nine-month race around the globe is becoming increasingly popular, with this site in 2006 receiving over 5 million unique visitors.
The initial pitch led us to inspiration for the creative idea for the site of conflict at the heart of the Volvo Ocean Race: man and technology versus nature. We built a flexible structure that would allow us to reflect the changing states of the race and the current conditions.
A concept was developed based on the three stages of the race 'past', 'present' and 'future'. This meant that the design and architecture of the site had to be flexible to reflect these different states and the needs of users within these areas.
My role in this project was not lead in design, but support, developing a series of key templates and pages, including additional services such as media players, and plasma screen information displays.
