Day 70 - Final days & summary

30th March, 2009

Our final days in Mexico consisted of shopping around Mexico City, and meeting our friends Anna & Edwina to watch Lucha Libre; Mexican wrestling. The event was very entertaining, seeing the masked heroes and villain throw each other around the ring with a complete disregard to how incredibly fake all their moves looked. Was the most entertainment we had in ages, and good to exchange travelling stories with the girls, catching up on what we’d both been up to in the past 6 weeks.

We nearly missed the connecting flight in Texas back due to getting drunk in a bar, but made it home in one piece. Is strange being back, and the weather here is so cold!

What an experience! Couldn’t have imagined we’d see so much and travel so far on this trip. We had less time than last year, but travelled nearly 3 times the distance, and consequently saw 3 times as much. It further clarifies in my mind that having your own transportation (assuming the trip is mostly on land) is without a doubt the best thing to do! The level of freedom, flexibility and fun it provides makes it more is worth it than you can imagine. It’s also cheaper in the long-run; we owned a car for 9 weeks in Central America for the price of renting a hire car in Europe for a weekend!

Each country had it’s interesting nuances, and so each was a separately exciting experience. Personally I loved Belize for it’s varied cultures and easygoing Garifuna attitude (not to mention English speaking tongue) and amazing diving!

For sheer people and culture impact I’d have to say Honduras was the best – again like last time with Laos – the poorest country in the region yields the nicest people.

Top experiences for me have been;
Owning the car throughout the experience
Diving the Great Blue Hole in Belize
Horse riding in Finca El Cisne in Honduras
Coconut Olympics in Tabasco, Mexico
Peering into a volcano carter in El Salvador
Playing with lava on an active volcano in Guatemala

Thanks to everyone who’s been reading, and to those who continue to read long after we’re back! It’s been great having you all follow our exploits, and nice to have your comments alongside our memories that will be stored here for a long time to come!

Those of you who have been following while we were out there, you have been one of a total of 342 unique visitors from 37 separate countries, making nearly 1000 visits over the 10 weeks! I hope you’ve all enjoyed reading the stories as much as I enjoyed writing about them. Hopefully see many of you soon to talk about the adventures face to face.

Thank-you again.
